Conscious Uprising is pleased to present the World Premiere of Boat People.
Join us in this journey to give voice to the many Haitian immigrants
who have been lost, shunned and abandoned by the country that they have
known and by the country that they had yet to know. This unique
performance combines original live music with the theatrical prowess of
internationally and classically trained actress Nancy Moricette.
Together they will weave a tale that that pays homage to all those
Haitian immigrants who have been lost but not forgotten at sea.
Nancy Moricette, critically acclaimed performer and Educator, comes back to New York after completing a Production of Winter Miller’s In Darfur in Chicago, where all the proceeds went to the American Refugee Committee to aid in the relief of oppressed Darfuri people and aid workers. She has performed with a variety of award winning Chicago theatre companies including Lookingglass, Goodman, Steppenwolf, Chicago Dramatist and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre where she was last seen in Macbeth under the direction of award winning Broadway director, David H. Bell. The guidance of her mentor and friend, Teo Castellanos (Edinburgh Fringe First Award Winner, founder of D-Projects) inevitably led her to create another solo piece entitled JASPORA which was conceived with the intent of starting a dialogue with alienated cultures from around the world. JASPORA was originally performed in Straubing, Germany, where it received rave reviews and also was featured as part of the 2007 New York Fringe Festival.
Please join us as we celebrate our Haitian brethren during Haitian flag Week.
When: Sunday, May 17th @ 5pm
Where: Solomon's Porch, 307 Stuyvesant at Halsey
Price: $15
(monies for this performance will be donated to a local school in Haiti that was destroyed by the many hurricanes that ravished the island last year)

Conscious Uprising: elevating glocal/eco-
consciousness through educating and
supporting the indie artist and their works
www.myspace.com/ConsciousUprising08Those of us that were able to experience the star that is NANCY
MORICETTE, were blessed by her message and presence in her one-woman
presentation, "BOAT PEOPLE".
We felt Nancy move through various
characters telling the tragedy that was/is a reality for many Haitians
that lost their lives and/or Family members in the pursuit of Liberty.
As Nancy stated, we become aware of social injustices when it becomes the new issue.
This
particular issue, as with many of our global and local issues, is not
new, but needs to be addressed with an intensity as if it is.
Proceeds from "BOAT PEOPLE" were donated to a school in Haiti that Nancy is closely related to.
Below
is a message from Nancy that includes her website should you want to
contact her with questions or a desire to assist and support.
With Respect,
Nedelka

Artist's Response
"A deep hole was filled for me (last week), Haitian flag week, on May 17, 2009.
To
be an artist in this country is to be a misfit; to be of other cultural
origins and an artist in this country at times can seem like
social
suicide.
I am an artist, I am a misfit, I am a victim of
social suicide but what I AM NOT....is without Friends and I am truly
blessed to now call Conscious Uprising one of those friends.
I thank you from the whole of my heart for producing Boat People for the Haitian Community in
Bedstuy.
CU is an amazing organization and I am inspired by what you have done
for me as an artist and person the love and care that you have put into
this project has encouraged me to aspire to do greater things.
I thank you, my ancestors thank you.
Peace and Blessings"
